Summary

This text offers a unique source of integrated information written specifically for massage therapists. 'Non-specific' backache causes over 90% of all backaches and costs the US economy an estimated $90 billion annually! There is no actual pathology (arthritis or disc disease, for example) associated with this form of backache, and massage therapy and soft tissue and exercise methods of treatment have been shown by recent research to be the most effective way of treating - and preventing - this widespread problem. The background to the evolution of 'non-specific' backache is described in detail, as are assessment and treatment methods ideal for use in combination with massage therapy deriving from physical therapy, osteopathic and chiropractic sources.
