Summary

The book is about how to teach arithmetic using an inquiry method. A child's innate love of learning is encouraged through hands-on exploration, discovery, and the creation of models. The Parent/Teacher Guide is a collection of lessons, games, activities, Black Line Masters, and an answer key to the student workbook. The Subjects covered are subtraction, multiplication, division, regrouping in addition, patterns, fractions, place value into the thousands, and other general math topics. This mathematics program was developed and successfully used at the University of California, Irvine Farm Elementary School.

Author Biography

Suki Lueck Glenn, B.A., M.A., and Elementary Teaching Credential, CSU, Fullerton. She taught children, ages five through seven, at the UC, Irvine Farm Elementary School for seven years. She was a consultant and mentor for teachers at the school for many years. The experience of teaching many children over twenty years lead her to the belief in individualized teaching and child-centered learning. She has worked with homeschool parents and tutored children, ages five through twelve. She continues learning through teaching children. Children are our best teachers. Susan Diane Carpenter, BA. Antioch College, M.S.T. University of Chicago. Susan began teaching second graders in Chicago Public Schools in 1969. Since then her career has spanned work with preschoolers through sixth graders in public, private, and alternative schools. She also supervised undergraduate and graduate students and worked with adult learners. She had the good fortune to teach and learn with Prof. Michael Butler, Suki Glenn and Alysia Krafel among others at the UCI Farm School 1982 -1999. There she observed first hand students understanding and enjoying mathematics while becoming better thinkers. Currently she lives on her hand-built boat in Iowa, grows heritage apples, and helps learners of all ages.
